It’s been a crazy week of work with little profit so im very much happy to be going home tomorrow after work. I feel like i should take this opportunity to improve my computing skills to be honest.
Ever since moving to Mac my computing abilities have kinda stood still because i never have any trouble. This is good in one aspect because i can always just do what i want to do but on the other hand im limiting my possibilities to learn new things and improve my skills. So im going to reformat both my macs over the next week or so, so that i can reinstall OSX and also install Ubuntu on them both and create at least one extra empty partition just in case i ever need to use it. Why do this? Well i haven’t done it since purchasing my mac’s so it will benefit it greatly but also because my disk is incredibly fragmented and i want to learn linux. Firstly just the basics by getting used to a new OS again and then learning the command line.
I hear nothing but great things about Linux as a server and i want to test those abilities on my Mac Mini as it will inevitably becomes a server/media centre computer when i move into the new house in about 3 weeks time. So im going to go with Ubuntu desktop first and in the next year or so i will go to ubuntu server if i like it (hence the reason for creating an extra partition. Either for ubuntu server or WinXP)
My MacBook will become my main machine again so i want it clean and ready to rumble for whatever i throw at it.
So what do you guys think? Is Linux really the way to go and do you think it’s worth the hassle learning it? (Keeping in mind that i have 2 months summer where i only work 6 hours a day)
